From an Abusive Home to an Ivy League Door: Mahek's Next Chapter

In a quiet moment away from the spotlight, our CEO Ravi Kantamsetty, recently sat down with one of our scholars, Mahek Das. On paper, it was a catch-up between a mentor and a beneficiary. In reality, it was a celebration of two extraordinary milestones.

Mahek, a proud product of Kranti, an NGO dedicated to empowering daughters of sex workers, has spent years redefining what is possible. After losing her mother to HIV and tuberculosis at the age of ten, Mahek and her elder sister fled an abusive home and found refuge at Kranti. There, she received education and training in the arts, excelled academically, and discovered her passion for theatre—first with the play Laal Batti Express, then at Wynberg Allen School in Mussoorie, and eventually on the stage of Broadway's Lincoln Center.

But Mahek isn't done yet. During their meeting, Mahek shared the news that has sent ripples of pride through both organizations: she has been accepted to Columbia University.

For Mr. Kantamsetty, the moment underscored the very mission of the foundation. "We don't just sponsor education. We sponsor potential," he said. "Mahek's journey is a testament to what happens when resilient talent meets timely opportunity. We are incredibly proud, and we remain ever-grateful to partners like Kranti, who do the grassroots work that makes stories like this possible."

Mahek carries with her an unshaken promise: that no matter where she goes, her heart remains with the marginalized communities she calls her own.

From resilience to the Ivy League—Mahek Das is just getting started.
