Education if used with a purpose can bring big change At a very young age of 23, Soumya has done what many at 50 also haven’t. She initiated Project Baala with the grant received by her from Warwick University. Having travelled across 5 continents extensively - she holds a deep passion for bridging the gap she has seen around the world. She compliments this passion with years of experience on the field in and outside India. Working in rural Haryana and Delhi slums introduced her to the reality of many deep rooted social problems that gained a global perceptive with her work experience in the rural of Ghana and South Africa. Soumya comes from New Delhi and is an Economist from the University of Warwick. Her academic background very ably supports her passion and experience in community development and understanding of the economic development of the girls. “So many injustices that I saw throughout the course of my life, because of gender, because of sexuality and also I am a survivor of abuse, and it is something which has shaped my worldview of what I want to change in the world.” I was born and brought up in the US and hold a postgraduate degree in gender studies apart from being a psychology and political science graduate. After graduating in psychology, I worked with United States Air Force and also volunteered with an anti-trafficking NGO in Uganda and came to Mumbai for six months for the same. The Mumbai experience proved to be a defining moment in my life, and somewhere a foundation for Kranti was laid into my mind. UU7I am a lesbian and had served in the US Military for quite a while until the noise started about this policy which prohibited gays/lesbians to serve openly in the military. When I decided to fight back for it, I had to face multiple challenges, being a colored woman, lesbian and also a person of Indian origin. After leaving military three years ago, I came to India to start Kranti. She was short listed as one of the 10 top finalists for Global Teacher Prize. She redefines the importance of a teacher. She emphasizes about how education and skill development can help in liberation of the socially oppressed people. Oppression can be overcome by empowerment and by equipping them with the required knowledge to face the world. Menstrupedia’s website receives 200,000 visitors per month. The comic book designed by them is available in Hindi and English now and 15 schools across India and using the books to educate school girls about periods. The books have been shipping to Uruguy, US, Uk, Sweden, Philippines, Nepal, Pakistan and Nigeria.They are working on Nepali and Spanish translation of the book which would be ready to be printed and distributed locally in Nepal and South America. Other than her involvement with the non-profit PUREYouth, Sanjana is a varsity tennis player, plays double bass, volunteers at RWJ hospital, and is a Girl Scout working on her gold award, so volunteering has always been a part of her life. With the assistance of PURE, Sanjana is able to work with schools all over the world in makings sure that they get the assistance that they need. About two years ago, Sanjana and her mom started a branch and through this, she has spent countless hours fundraising and spreading awareness for schools in many countries, including rural schools in south India and inner-city schools in North America. After funding and witnessing the success of various dining halls, online facilities, libraries, and other supplies, it inspired her. How could a small group of teenagers in New Jersey change the lives of countless others? While working with PURE, she understood the true power of the youth and how, yes, we can change the world despite what we have been told. Laxmi recalls the horrific day when she was acid attacked in New Delhi and how a decade later, she's turned this chapter of her life into a narrative of triumph today. She's not alone in this fight against acid attacks anymore and her initiative Sheroes is bringing together other acid attach victims too! Laxmi, a girl like everyone, young and beautiful with a dream in her eyes, The passion of singing who aced many talent hunt competitions and was waiting for a call from ‘Indian Idol’. Laxmi was acid attacked in Khan Market, Delhi 2005 by a mid-aged man ho was pursuing her for marriage. She was in her young age when she used to learn dancing and was completing her education. In 2006 she filed a PIL on punishments against perpetrators of acid violence and regulation on sale of acid in India. The PIL got judgment in her favor in 2013 and the amendments in the constitutions were framed as Laxmi Act. Since then she has continued her journey to eradicate acid violence in India. After being awarded as International Women of Courage by the First Lady of US Mrs. Michelle Obama, today she is the face of any and every unprivileged acid attack surviving women in India.
